Jack Conger Wins Second Silver Medal at World University Games
GWANGJU, South Korea – Texas rising junior swimmer Jack Conger helped the USA to a silver medal in the 400-meter medley relay Friday on the final day of swimming at the 2015 World University Games.
Conger (Rockville, Md.) joined Jacob Pebley, Daniel MacDonald and Matthew Josa to win silver for the United States in 3 minutes, 34.61 seconds, just five one-hundredths of a second behind gold medalist Russia. Japan took the bronze in 3:34.82.
Japan and Russia held first and second respectively through 300 meters before Conger closed the gap on the relay's anchor leg. Conger passed Japan's Toru Maruyama for second place and nearly ran down Russia's Mikhail Polishchuk at the finish. Conger anchored the relay in 47.95 seconds, the fastest among the eight anchor swims in the final.
Conger leaves his second stint at the World University Games with gold in the 400m freestyle relay (with UT's Matt Ellis), silver in the 400m medley relay and 100m freestyle and bronze in the 100m backstroke. Former Longhorn Clay Youngquist added gold in the 800m freestyle relay and silver in the 200m freestyle.
Texas rising senior Cory Bowersox opened the diving competition Friday at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Ontario. Representing the United States, Bowersox placed 14th in the three-meter preliminary round with 321.35 points and fell two places short of qualification for Saturday's final. The three-time All-American will compete in synchronized three-meter diving on July 13.
