THE RED RIVER RIVALRY represents the defining moment for the Longhorns’ season and the Burnt Orange Nation has become restless waiting for another victory in the shootout. The Sooners outplayed the Longhorns on every level last year in their 63-21 win. [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] Oklahoma’s defense punished David Ash, knocking him out of the game while simultaneously knocking the wind out of Longhorn fans still clinging onto hope that Texas could win the conference title.
With four-year starting quarterback Landry Jones gone, Blake Bell ranks as the likely replacement after showing off his skills in the OU spring game. The Sooners will lean heavily on running back Damien Williams to ease the transition for “The Belldozer,” along with a deceptively skilled young group of receivers that features potential breakthrough wideouts Jalen Saunders and Sterling Shepard.
Ash and the powerful backfield of Johnathan Gray, Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron must exploit a middling Oklahoma run defense that ranked 80th in the nation last season. “Magic” Mike Davis and Jaxon Shipley should dominate a secondary unit that lost three starters, including headhunting safety Tony Jefferson. NFL prospect Aaron Colvin will make plays in the game but he can only cover one receiver each play.
The time for making excuses has run out. Texas has all the weapons and experience to emerge victorious. However, this is Oklahoma, and Texas should prepare for a fight.
Texas knows its mission — beat the Sooners and the road to the Big 12 Championship becomes much smoother. But if the Longhorns lose to Oklahoma for a fourth straight year, the entire Texas State Fair won’t provide enough fried food to ease the woes of the Longhorn faithful.
