411OnTheForty: Men’s basketball jumps to No. 11 in latest AP poll
AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas men's basketball team may have had its biggest game of the week postponed, but Shaka Smart's squad showed enough to convince the Associated Press voters to move the Horns up to No. 11 in the latest AP top 25 poll.
The ranking is the highest for Texas in the Smart era, topping last week's No. 13 selection.
Texas rolled over Texas State, 74-53, in its lone game of the week last Wednesday, behind 18 points from freshman forward Greg Brown. Sunday's Big 12 opener at No. 2 Baylor was called off less than 24 hours before tip-off due to Covid-19 within Baylor's program.
The ranking could offer the Longhorns a measure of optimism as they head into their games against teams from the Big 12, which landed three teams in the top 10: Baylor at No. 2, Kansas at No. 5 and West Virginia at No. 8.
Up next for the Longhorns is a non-conference duel with Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at the Frank Erwin Center. The Bearkats are 3-4, and have yet to beat a Div. I opponent this season. The game will be carried on the Longhorn Network and on 104.9 the Horn.
