Texas Longhorns continued their winning ways with a high scoring win over UTSA 56-7.
A win that most knew would happen and also showed the depth Texas has at many positions.
Quinn Ewers goes down with a strained abdomen which is reported to be not as serious as folks thought and he may be out just a game or two. Coach Sarkisian said, “Quinn is day-to-day.”
Ewers before leaving the game ran the offense with precision throwing 16 passes, connecting on 14 for 185 yards and two touchdowns.
Sarkisian commented before about how efficient Ewers was against Michigan, check this out. Ewers hit eight different receivers. Ryan Wingo had 127 yards receiving with a touchdown, Isaiah Bond tallied 103 yards receiving and two touchdowns, and Johntay Cook II found the end zone twice on just three carries and 35 yards.
To top that off, Ewers threw a 49 pass to Gunnar Helm who demonstrated he can leap over tall buildings.
The one rushing touchdown came from Ewers’ backup, Arch Manning, after he ‘juked’ the secondary and took the ball 67 yards while topping speeds of 20.7 miles per hour.
Manning threw 12 passes and completed nine for 223 yards and four touchdowns. QB3 Trey Owens also got experience passing four times and connecting twice to Silas Bolden.
Texas ran 67 plays over 14 drives. Of the 14 drives, seven resulted in a touchdown. In the red zone, Texas was 4-5 and scored 28 points to UTSA getting into the red zone just once. Texas would get to fourth down just twice in the entire game. Texas had 25 first downs.
This is incredible! AP has now ranked Texas #1. Not since 2008 has this occurred.
The defense was equally impressive and kept UTSA to just one touchdown over 16 drives. Three sacks, four QB hurries, and two pass breakups, along with an interception returned for an end zone diving touchdown by Ethan Burke marked a great day for the Texas defense.
So, here’s the big question. If Manning performs really well against ULM this upcoming week, will Ewers remain QB1? We think he does. Ewers is on a track and has been playing exception football, so there is no reason to upset that.
