Since 1894 Texas and Arkansas have played 79 times. Texas has won 56 of those meetings, however one in particular in 1969 was the tipping point.
It was called “The Big Shootout.” In 1969 #1 Texas played #2 Arkansas. Both teams undefeated and the winner would likely secure the National Championship…and we did!
The game was so big President Richard Nixon attended.
Texas was known for the wishbone, heavy run attack offense, and Arkansas was more a passing offense. Texas’ reliance on the run proved critical in the end as it allowed them to run down the clock.
There is so much history that Texas Longhorns Network created an outstanding documentary that takes fans through “The Big Shootout.
