AUSTIN, Texas — Women’s basketball head coach Vic Schaefer added to his reputation as a strong recruiter Monday when the Texas athletic department announced that Kobe King-Hawea, the nation’s top junior college recruit according to the World Exposure Report, had signed with Texas.
Schaefer especially likes the versatility the 5-foot-11 guard/forward will bring to his team next season.
“Obviously, we are ecstatic about adding the No. 1 junior college prospect in the country to our existing outstanding recruiting class,” Schaefer said. “I think the thing that sticks out most about Kobe is her versatility. She is a basketball player who can play multiple positions. Her skill set will allow her to be a tremendous mismatch, depending on what position she’s playing.”
King-Hawea, who hails from New Zealand, will play her second collegiate season in the United States at Casper College in Wyoming. Last season, at Gillette (Wyo.) College, King-Hawea averaged 20.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game (Gillette cut athletics after last season due to Covid-19). She also set numerous school records as a freshman, recording the only triple-double in Gillette program history.
Gillette went 28-5 in her only season. She earned NJCAA Region IX Division I-North Most Valuable Player and All-Tournament honors last year, as she led the division in scoring and assists and ranked second in rebounding.
King-Hawea joins a trio of ESPN top-20 high school recruits who signed last week: Rori Harmon, Kyndall Hunter and Aaliyah Moore. The class is currently ranked No. 4 in the country by ESPN.
