Texan Media an independent Texas LLC owns and operates Horns Illustrated, an Austin-headquartered company and Texas Longhorns Sports publication. For more than 20 years Horns Illustrated has supported the University of Texas, its system schools and surrounding communities. Our goal is to provide fair, objective and quality oriented human interest content. Our digital platforms incorporate the latest technology, including new and emerging social media software. With this approach Horns Illustrated members and guests have access to content via multiple options, including PCs, Macs, tablets and mobile devices.
About Texan Media
Texan Media was co-founded by Rick Gross and James Schleicher. The team believes passionately in serving the University and community in a positive, ethical manner. Gross has been an Austin-based entrepreneur for more than 20 years. In 2009, in association with UT Professors, he co-founded an ocular interruption laser based technology (from UT) for use in various governmental applications. As Co-Founder and CEO of Vindicator Technologies, he spearheaded corporate strategy which dominated the governmental, critical asset electronic security space, selling the company to Honeywell International, a Fortune 100 company in 2004. In the mid-late 70’s Gross served in the US Army’s 5th Special Forces Group. Schleicher serves as Publisher for Horns Illustrated. A long time Austin resident, he is a graduate of Westlake High School and a sports enthusiast. Schleicher studied journalism and received his degree in English from the University of Washington. After college, he briefly served in the US Navy. Upon his return to Texas, Schleicher saw an investment opportunity with Horns Illustrated and is aggressively working with Gross to integrate emerging digital and social media concepts to the brand. Our staff includes an impressive array of veteran personnel consisting of experienced Board of Directors, a respected Board of Advisors, numerous UT alumni, editors, writers and a host of ambitious and talented newcomers. Our managing editor, Carissa Stith, graduated from UT with a degree in Rhetoric and Writing. Stith has an extensive background in digital marketing, allowing her to help guide the Horn Illustrated’s strategy for connecting UT sports fans via social media. Our technology and platforms are being developed and managed by a staff of technical and digital savvy personnel. The full color, glossy print edition of Horns Illustrated is published seven times per year (Jan/Feb, Mar/Apr, May/Jun, July-Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec.) with the Digital Website providing 12 months of continuous updates.
We've recently expanded our relationships with other UT System Schools to include UTA and UTSA. These locations are managed by our Regional Directors in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. We cover the full range of UT Austin sports which includes men’s and women’s athletics, as well as club sports and a host of special content topics. In July 2013 we launched a new interactive website focused on leveraging social media channels and providing real time updates on UT sports from around the web and off line sources. In 2012, we created and released a new interactive web presence integrating the social media "GET CONNECTED" concept. We solidified our brand as the premier independent UT sport focused publication, expanded our reach statewide and partnered with numerous companies, associations, local and regional businesses and launched the Horns Illustrated Digital Edition. In 2011 — we developed and extended the Horns Illustrated brand via Facebook and Twitter. Stay tuned, more exciting changes are coming!
Texan Media is an independent and privately funded Texas headquartered business entity. We support local charities including such as Cure Duchenne and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
