AMES, Iowa — Junior guard Ariel Atkins hit 10 of 17 shots from the floor, including three of five from beyond the three-point line, en route to leading all scorers with a career-high 25 points as the No. 16/16 University of Texas women’s basketball team knocked off Iowa State, 75-68, Sunday in Ames, Iowa.

The victory — UT’s second straight at Iowa State, which [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]never had been done before in program history — improved the Longhorns’ record to 8-4 overall and 2-0 against Big 12 teams, while the Cyclones fell to 9-4 overall and 0-2 in conference games.

Texas head coach Karen Aston said after the game that beating the Cyclones for the third consecutive time was no easy task for the Longhorns.

“Iowa State plays a style that is difficult to guard, and it tested our discipline,” Aston said. “Any win is a big win in the Big 12, but a road win is huge.”

Senior center Kelsey Lang scored 11 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to collect her sixth double-double of the year, and added five blocked shots. Junior guard Brooke McCarty scored 13 points and tied her season high with six assists.

Each team fired 61 shots from the floor. UT hit 29 (for a field goal percentage of 37.5), while Iowa State hit 25 (41.0).

The Longhorns now head south — a little — to Lawrence, Kan., where they will face the Jayhawks at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 4 in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN3.
