The Texas Longhorns' 2013 season got off to an auspicious start, as the Horns turned the ball over three times in the first half, but the team turned things around quickly and gave their fans plenty to cheer about by the end of its 56-7 win over New Mexico State. David Ash shook off two first half interceptions and had a career night, throwing for 343 yards and 4 touchdowns. Ash also flashed his dual threat ability, rushing eight times for 91 yards and a touchdown, including a sensational 55-yard score.

New Mexico State silenced the Texas home crowd for the majority of the first half and punctuated the point when Andrew McDonald connected with Joshua Bowen to give the Aggies a 7-0 lead in the second quarter. The lead, luckily for Texas, didn't last long as Ash connected hit John Harris for a 54-yard touchdown. 40 seconds later, Ash hooked up with Daje Johnson to give the Horns a 14-7 lead on a 66-yard score. The Longhorns never looked back.

The Texas defense deserves high marks for holding the New Mexico State offense for nearly the entire game, which allowed Ash to take his time getting into a rhythm. And it probably bears mentioning that Texas set a school record with 715 yards on offense. Chew on that for a bit.

Texas now heads to Provo, Utah next week to face BYU in an incredibly hostile environment. To beat the Cougars on the road, Texas must find some offensive success much earlier. It also probably wouldn't hurt for David Ash to learn to slide. But that we can work on that. If Texas can put together a full game on both sides of the ball, unleashing the lightning-quick plays like they did in tonight's second half with the likes of Malcolm Brown and Daje Johnson, the Horns have a great chance to be 2-0 and all will be forgiven for any miscues tonight.
