BYU: Trap Game for The Longhorns?

Every year, every college football team faces a few games that they should win but won’t. We refer to these as “trap games” and they can make or break a season.

Texas should beat BYU. That is no outlandish statement — but could this be a “trap game”? [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]  At least one sports writer from around the nation believes so.

Sean Frye from Bleacher Report’s Big 12 Football believes that the Texas Longhorns could be in for a huge upset in Week 2 as they travel to Provo, Utah to face the BYU Cougars.

Frye writes that although the Longhorns offense put up huge numbers in Week 1 against New Mexico State, that simply won’t be the case in Week 2. Last year, the Cougars ranked third nationally in total defense, second in rush defense and 10th in pass defense.

Although BYU returns just five starters from that unit, they did hold the Virginia Cavaliers to just 19 points in their opener.

Despite losing the game 19-16, the Cougars allowed the Cavaliers to gain just 223 yards of total offense and limited Virginia quarterback David Watford to just 114 yard passing.

That means David Ash, who is still learning the new no-huddle offense in Austin, will certainly have his hands full on Saturday. Ash did look good against New Mexico State, throwing for 343 yards and four touchdowns. But he also had two interceptions on the day.

BYU’s rush defense certainly won’t let the Longhorns even sniff the 359 yards that Texas gained on the ground in Week 1, either.

It’s always tough to play a good defensive team, especially on the road. That puts the Longhorns squarely in the midst of a trap game on Saturday.
