Eagles takes off with eye toward professional career
AUSTIN, Texas — Make it an even half dozen.
Wide receiver Brennan Eagles because the sixth Texas player in the last three weeks to opt out of the remainder of the 2020 season and all future eligibility in order to begin preparation for the 2021 NFL Draft.
"First off, I would like to thank everyone who supported me in this process, especially my family — if it weren't for them, I wouldn't be where I am today,” Eagles said in a statement released through the Texas athletic department. “They are my support system and my 'Why.' I have been fortunate to have great coaches in both high school and college who have greatly impacted my life. I would like to extend a special acknowledgement to (wide receivers) Coach (Andre) Coleman, (head) Coach (Tom) Herman and (strength and conditioning) Coach (Yancy) McKnight for developing me into a better person on and off the field. They have instilled qualities and values in me that I will continue to use throughout my lifetime. I am greatly appreciative of the academic and medical staffs that have helped me on my journey thus far.
“With all that being said, my family and I have made the decision that I will pursue my dream of playing at the next level and declare for the 2021 NFL Draft.”
Eagles led the Longhorns this season with a team-high 28 receptions and 469 yards; his five receiving touchdowns and average of 16.8 yards per reception were second among all UT receivers. In his career, he caught 61 passes for 1,026 yards and 11 touchdowns over three seasons. He has caught at least one pass in the last 21 games of his career, the longest active streak by any UT player. Eight of his 11 career touchdown receptions covered least 30 yards.
The Longhorns will wrap up the 2020 season Tuesday when they face Colorado in the Valero Alamo Bowl.
