From Forty Acres to FIBA, Collier to rep USA in 3×3 tourney in China

AUSTIN – From the Forty Acres to FIBA, freshman Charli Collier is going international as a representative on the USA Basketball team for the upcoming 3×3 Women’s Series tournament in Chengdu, China.

Collier posted 5.9 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game in her inaugural season for the Texas women’s basketball team, leading the Longhorns with 20 blocks.

She is one of four athletes picked to represent USA at the inaugural FIBA tourney, which will take place May 31-June 1 with teams from Australia, China, France, Japan, Mongolia, Netherlands and Ukraine all taking part as well.

The tournament gives Olympic fans a chance at a glimpse of the new basketball discipline, as the inclusion of 3×3 is coming next year in the 2020 Olympics.

Joining Collier are Bella Alarie (Princeton), Aleah Goodman (Oregon State) and Christyn Williams (UConn).

On top of the upcoming tournament, there are up to 12 events slated for the series that will play out from May to September, with the upcoming dates being announced on the official website at https://ws.fiba3x3.com.

The eight competing teams were split into two groups of four for the preliminary round, with USA opening play against France.

Then Collier and the squad will take on Australia and Mongolia. The medal round is scheduled for June 1 based on the standings from the first round, with the No. 1 team on each side earning a bye.

According to UT, the team was selected by the USA Basketball 3×3 National Team Selection Committee, which is comprised of USA Basketball Women’s National Team director Carol Callan, USA Basketball Youth & Sport Development director Jay Demings, USA Basketball Men’s National Team assistant director Samson Kayode, 2008 Olympic gold medalist and USA 3×3 team consultant Kara Lawson and 1997 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year Mo McHone, who has served on numerous USA Basketball coaching staffs from 1998-2018 and has coached in the NBA, NBA G League, Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and internationally in South Korea.

June 1 games

5:30 a.m. CT – B2/A3
5:50 a.m. CT – A2/B3
6:20 a.m. CT – A1 vs. winner B2/A3
6:45 a.m. CT – winner A2/B3 vs. B1
7:30 a.m. CT – gold medal game
