Future Longhorns Named All-State and All-Stars
AUSTIN, Texas – Before joining the Texas Softball program in the fall, five incoming freshmen enjoyed successful campaigns as high school seniors, culminating in all-star and all-state selections. Devon Tunning and Stephanie Wong earned places on the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) 4A-5A All-Star squads while Tunning, Wong, Tiarra Davis, Mickenzi Krpec and Lauren Slatten combined to receive eight all-state honors from the TGCA, Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association (TXSWA) and the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Tunning and Wong will have the opportunity to play at Red & Charline McCombs Field prior to kicking off their UT careers by participating in the TGCA 4A-5A All-Star game at 2 p.m. Friday, July 12. Tunning, of Montgomery High School, will suit up for the Blue squad while Austin native and Westlake graduate Wong will play for the Red. As seniors, both earned TGCA and Collins Street Bakery/TXSWA All-State honors, Tunning at the 4A level and Wong at 5A. Tunning, who was tabbed the 2013 The Courier of Montgomery County’s All-County Offensive MVP, hit .580, drove in 22 runs and scored 31 for the season. Wong earned spots on the All-District 15-5A First Team and Austin American-Statesman All-Central Texas Softball First Team and was selected to play in the 14th Annual Greater Austin Area High School All-Star Game.
Davis, a Collin Street Bakery/TXSWA 3A First-Team selection as a senior, was named the 2013 District 16-3A overall Most Valuable Player after posting a 0.70 ERA and 171 strikeouts during district play to lead Henderson High School to the championship with a 10-0 record. At the plate during her senior year in district action, she hit .661 with three home runs, three triples, 11 doubles, 15 RBI, 34 runs and did not strike out. She helped the squad to an overall 27-10 mark and a trip to the regional quarterfinals in her final season.
Krpec earned a spot on the TGCA 4A All-State Team and was named the Collin Street Bakery/TXSWA 4A Co-Player of the Year and the 4A First Team shortstop as a senior. She capped her career by leading Foster High School to a 4A University Interscholastic League State Softball Tournament appearance before suffering a 10-5 setback in 12 innings to Lovejoy in the semifinals. With her TGCA 4A All-State Team selection as a sophomore in 2011, she became the first softball player in Foster history to receive all-state accolades.
Slatten, who played her first two years at Elgin High School in Texas before moving to Cincinnati and attending Oak Hills High School, earned Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Division I First-Team All-State honors as a senior. She was named by the Women’s Sports Association of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky as one of the organization’s High School Sportswomen of the Year Top-10 Finalists and was the softball winner. She posted a 23-3 record with 14 shutouts, a 0.60 earned-run average and 321 strikeouts in 174 innings pitched during her final high school campaign.
