Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido became the winningest coach in college baseball history, on Tuesday night as the Longhorns beat Texas State 5-1 to give Garrido his 1,894th career win.
“This means a lot to me,” Garrido said. “I get the credit, my name’s on it, but it belongs to everyone.”
Garrido said the record belonged as[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] much to him as it does all those who played for him and worked with him.
“It’s something that we can all remember for the rest of our lives,” Garrido said of what the game meant to the players. “They did something that no can take away from them. It’s pretty cool.”
To Garrido the record doesn’t re-define him or what he does.
“I like what I do,” Garrido said. “I look forward to doing it. I like the relationships involved with it. I like the teacher’s role that I have in it. So that’s where all the rewards are in it for me.”
The win put Garrido ahead of Gordon Gillespie, who had 1,893 wins, to make him the winningest coach at any classification. Garrido had claimed the Division 1 record in 2003. A college coach for over 45 years, Garrido has also coached at Cal State Fullerton, Illinois, Cal Poly and San Francisco State.
Junior pitcher Lukas Schiraldi guided the Longhorns to the win as he threw sevening innings of one-hit ball and allowed just one earned run.
“He’s the best Tuesday night pitcher in college baseball,” Garrido said. “He’s got an electric fastball, a very good curveball, he’s not afraid to attack the catcher’s mitt and he’s not afraid of the hitters. We want to keep him in a starting role. We’ve got Rice two Tuesdays in a row coming up.”
The Texas offense continued to hit well as the offense scored five runs. Ben Johnson hit second home run of the season in the fourth. Mark Payton, C.J Hinojosa, Collin Shaw and Tres Barrera each batted in a run as well. This past weekend the Horns outscored Columbia 24-4 as they swept the three game series.
“We’re playing good team baseball,” Schiraldi said. “We’re getting the hits when we need it. I don’t know how many two-out hits have led to RBI’s for us. We’re playing extremely well and we’re confident going into Lubbock.”
Texas resumes Big-12 conference play with a three game series at Texas Tech this weekend.
