AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 11/10 University of Texas women’s basketball team got a double-double from Joyner Holmes en route to an easy 75-42 victory Saturday over Kansas that gave UT at least 20 victories for the fourth consecutive season and extended the nation’s second-longest winning streak to 18 games.
With the victory, Texas [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]improved to 20-4 overall and remained perfect at 14-0 against Big 12 opponents. Kansas fell to 8-17 overall and 2-12 against conference foes.
Head coach Karen Aston said the Longhorns’ run of success is due in large part to the fact that their young players are raising their level of play to match that of their upperclass teammates.
“I thought today was a really solid performance by our team,” Aston said. “Our young players executed things really well today and that means that we are growing and getting better as a basketball team.”
Holmes scored 15 points and hauled down 13 rebounds to record the seventh double-double of her freshman season. Senior center Kelsey Lang chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds, while Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau added four points, six rebounds and a career-high five blocked shots.
The Longhorns had a strong game on the defensive end, collecting a season-high 13 blocks and holding their opponents to fewer than 10 points in the second and third quarters, when KU scored just eight and nine points, respectively.
UT leads the all-time series between the schools, 24-10, and has won the last 10 games against the Jayhawks.
The Longhorns now interrupt the Big 12 portion of their schedule to travel Tallahassee, Fla., to face No. 5/4 Florida State at 6 p.m. Monday in a game that will broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
