With groundbreaking underway to expand and upgrade DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium, it seemed a perfect timing to also update Herman’s contract and give him — and the football team — some stability heading into the highly-anticipated 2019 season.
Herman and the Horns went 10-4 last season and took down No. 5 Georgia in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, putting Texas squarely on the map of contention once again.
“I’m so grateful for President (Gregory L.) Fenves, Chris Del Conte and the UT Board of Regents, and for all the support they provide me, my family and our football program,” Herman said.
The contract extension was approved by the University of Texas Board of Regents, as all multiple year contracts must be, during their meeting Thursday.
The 43-year-old Herman clearly has the approval of his team and those who brought him over from the University of Houston, where he posted a 22-4 record.
“I truly love being the head football coach at Texas,” Herman added. I’m enjoying every minute of it, am so fortunate to have a tremendous staff, and the players in our program are just awesome to work with. We’ve done some good things, but have so much more we are preparing to accomplish. I’m excited for the future.”
Del Conte was instrumental — as he has been with all things Longhorn athletics — in ensuring Herman wouldn’t have to live in limbo or play out his contract before getting the much-deserved extension.
“Coach Herman is building something very special and we couldn’t be more excited about his leadership of our football program,” Del Conte said. “There have been many great accomplishments, and the culture he is establishing is one that focuses on maximizing the student-athletes on the field and developing them as young men off the field, in the classroom and in our community. We are lucky to have him and thrilled to be extending his contract. The future of Texas Football is in great hands.”
The extension for Herman is set to pay him $6.5 million in 2022 and $6.75 million in the final year of his now-five year contract.
