Football
The Texas Football team will host Fan Fest and the Orange-White Scrimmage Saturday, March 30. The scrimmage kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and will give Longhorn fans a unique opportunity to see the 2013 Texas football team in action. Fans can take photos with the players immediately following the scrimmage.
Men’s Basketball
The Texas Men’s Basketball team ended its season with a, 73-72, loss to Houston Wednesday, March 20, in the first round of the CBI Tournament. Myck Kabongo, Julian Lewis, and Prince Ibeh led the scoring for the Longhorns. Lewis scored a career-high 25 points. Kabongo added 15 points, six assists and four steals while Ibeh finished with a career-high 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
The team finished the season with a 16-18 overall record and went 7-11 in Big 12 Conference play.
Baseball
The Texas Baseball team (14-9, 1-2 Big 12) won their series against Minnesota over the weekend with a 6-3 win Sunday.
The Longhorns started the series Friday dropping a tough game to the Gophers 5-1. Gopher’s pitcher Tom Windle pitched a complete game and struck out a career-high 12 batters.
The Longhorns came back strong Saturday and snapped a three-game losing streak and won 5-4 in the 10th inning. Cory Knebel picked…[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] up the win for the Horns and struck out three batters in two innings. Alex Silver led the Horn’s offense going 3 for 5 and recorded three RBIs.
The Longhorns finished the series Sunday with another strong performance and won 6-3. Nathan Thornhill picked up the win for the Horns and struck out five batters over six innings while giving up three earned runs. Cory Knebel recorded the save—his fourth of the season—and struck out three batters over two innings.
Softball
The Texas Softball team (29-4, 2-0 Big 12) opened conference play with a two-game series against Baylor last week and won 4-0 and 5-1. The Horns showed strong pitching and offensive prowess in both victories.
Blaire Luna pitched a complete game shutout Saturday, March 23, and struck out 14 batters in the 4-0 victory. Kim Bruins led the Longhorn’s offense with a two-RBI game.
Luna picked up her fifteenth win of the season with a 5-1 victory over Baylor Sunday. She pitched seven innings and struck out 11 batters while giving up one unearned run.
Bruins added another strong offensive outing Sunday, going three-for-four with another two-RBI game.
The Texas Softball team returns to action Thursday, March 28 against Kansas in Big 12 conference play.
Men’s Tennis
The Texas Men’s Tennis team (12-5) picked up two wins Saturday, against Abilene Christian and Rice—sweeping both matches, 7-0.
In the Abilene Christian match, Soren-Hess Olesen defeated Gulhemere Gesser, 6-1, 6-3, in the deciding singles match.
In the Rice match, No. 82 Daniel Whitehead defeated Philipp Seifert, 6-3, 6-2, in the deciding singles match.
The Horns will open conference play against Oklahoma Friday, April 5, in Norman, Okla.
Women’s Tennis
The Texas Women’s Tennis team (8-8, 4-0 Big 12) picked up two conference wins this week against Iowa State and West Virginia, but dropped a non-conference match to Miami (Fla.).
The Horns swept Iowa State, 7-0, Thursday. No. 42 Aeriel Ellis defeated Simona Cacciuttolo, 6-1, 6-4, in the first singles match.
Lana Groenvynck defeated Caroline Andersen, 6-1, 6-1, in the deciding singles match.
The Longhorns lost 6-1 to Miami (Fla.) Friday. No. 52 Breaunna Addison grabbed the lone win for the Longhorns—defeating Lina Lileikite, 6-3, 6-1, in the second singles match.
The Horns were able to remain undefeated in conference play with a, 7-0, win over West Virginia Sunday.
The win pushes the team to four straight victories in the Big 12.
No. 42 Aeriel Ellis defeated Audrey Wooland, 6-1, 6-3, in the deciding singles match.
Texas’ Elizabeth Begley and Aeriel Ellis defeated Emily Mathis and Audrey Wooland, 8-4, in the deciding doubles match.
The Tennis team returns home to take on SMU in Austin March 31.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Laura Sogar won the NCAA title in the 200-yard Breaststroke Saturday, with a time of 2 minutes, 5.41 seconds. The win made Sogar the Longhorn’s first individual swimming National Champion since 2001.
Sogar also finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke Friday, and achieved her third consecutive All-American finish in the event.
The Texas Longhorns placed ninth in the final team standings of the NCAA Championships.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
The Texas Men’s Swimming and Diving team continues to prepare for the NCAA Championships set to take place March 28-March 30 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Horns have 11 swimmers and two divers that will compete in the Championships.
Longhorn MVP (Best Athlete over this Week’s Events):
The MVP honors for this week go to Longhorn-swimmer, Laura Sogar, who won Texas’ first NCAA individual swimming title since 2001.
Honorable mention:
Blaire Luna—for pitching a complete game shutout and striking out 14 batters while only allowing one hit against Baylor.
