Baseball
The Texas baseball team played a three-game series versus rival Oklahoma this weekend at UFCU Disch-Falk Field and lost two out of three games.
The series started Friday when the Longhorns lost 2-1 to Oklahoma. The Sooners were led by star pitcher Jonathan Gray, who picked up his sixth win of the season, and many believe will be the first pick in the upcoming MLB draft. Gray pitched 6.2 innings, allowed one unearned run, and struck out eight.
The Longhorns tied the series Saturday with a 1-0 shutout victory over the Sooners. Left-handed pitcher Dillon Peters, who had the no-hitter broken up in the eighth inning, led Texas to victory. Peters pitched 7.2 innings, allowed two hits, and struck out five. Corey Knebel picked up the save and struck out two. Ben Johnson led the Longhorns in hitting with an RBI-single in the fifth inning, scoring Mark Gottsacker.
On Sunday afternoon…[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] the Longhorns weren’t able to hold on to an early lead. The Sooners rallied in the eighth inning and took a, 4-2, victory and the series, led by Hector Lorenzana’s three-RBI game.
Softball
The Texas softball team won three games this week. The Lady Longhorns defeated Texas Southern, 8-0, and defeated Western Kentucky twice, 4-0 and 3-1.
The Texas pitchers combined for a perfect game against Texas Southern Thursday night between Kim Bruins, Gabby Smith, Holly Kern, and Blaire Luna. The game marked the Longhorns 11th perfect game in program history, but the first one to come from a combined effort. Luna picked up her eighteenth win of the season. The Longhorn hitters had a great day as well and recorded nine hits. Kim Bruins led the Longhorn hitters with a three-RBI game.
A Texas grand slam and no-hitter highlighted the Longhorns, 4-0, victory over Western Kentucky Saturday evening. Karina Scott gave the Longhorns the led in the sixth inning with her deep shot. Blaire Luna pitched her second no-hitter of the season. She also struck out 16 batters. Luna had a perfect game going into the seventh inning, but a lead-off walk by Western Kentucky’s Cruce spoiled the chance.
Men’s Tennis
The Texas men’s tennis team went 1-1 this week. Oklahoma defeated Texas 5-2 in Norman on Friday. The Longhorns rebounded Sunday and swept Oklahoma State, 7-0, in Stillwater.
In the loss to Oklahoma, Nick Naumann and David Holiner recorded the only wins for the Longhorns.
In the win over Oklahoma State, David Holiner defeated Trevor Horstmann, 6-3 and 6-4, in the deciding singles match.
The Texas men’s tennis team improved to 1-1 in Big 12 play and 13-6 overall.
Women’s Tennis
The Texas women’s tennis team went 2-1 this week. The Longhorns picked up wins against Florida International and Boston University, but lost a close match-up to Texas Tech.
The Longhorns defeated Florida International, 7-0, in Austin on Friday. Elizabeth Begley defeated Magali Holt, 6-2 and 6-1, in the deciding singles match.
The Longhorns dropped their Big 12 conference game against Texas Tech on Saturday, 4-3. Tech’s Nikki Sanders defeated Lina Padegimaite, 6-3 and 6-3, in the deciding singles match.
Texas closed the weekend with a, 7-0, victory over Boston University. Noel Scott defeated Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis, 6-4 and 6-0, in the deciding singles match.
Two-time All-American Aeriel Ellis’ Senior Day ended with her 100th career singles victory Sunday.
Men’s Golf
The No. 4 Texas men’s golf team came from behind to win the Augusta State Invitational and successfully defended last year’s title. Brandon Stone finished with a 70 in the final round, picking up his fifth top five finish of the season and finished fourth overall in the Invitational.
The Longhorns return to action Saturday, April 13, when they host the Morris Williams Intercollegiate at The University of Texas Golf Club in Austin.
Women’s Track
The Texas Women’s Track and Field team competed in the 69th Annual Pepsi Florida Relays on Saturday afternoon. The Longhorns 4×400 meter relay team finished third with a time of 3 minutes, 27.97 seconds. The members of the relay team that competed were: Kendra Chambers, Briana Nelson, Danielle Dowie, and Courtney Okolo.
Texas returns home to host a pair of meets over the next two weeks—the Texas Invitational on Saturday, April 13 , and the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday, April 20.
Longhorn MVP:
The Texas softball team. They went 3-0 this week. The wins versus Texas Southern and Western Kentucky featured a perfect game, a no-hitter, and a grand slam—wow!
Honorable Mention:
The Texas men’s golf team. For their win at the Augusta State Invitational and for defending the title. Freshman Brandon Stone led the way for the Longhorns and grabbed his fifth top five finish with a scorecard of 70 in the final round.
