Baseball
The Texas Baseball team defeated the Houston Cougars on Tuesday, but were swept by Baylor in a three game road series.
Erich Weiss hit his first home run of the season against Houston at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday in a 4-0 win. Josh Urban, Travis Duke, and Ty Marlow combined to shut out the Cougars in a four-hit game. Weiss, Weston Hall, and C.J Hinojosa each picked up an RBI.
The Longhorns struggled against Baylor in Waco this weekend, dropping all three games. In the series opener on Friday, the Horns recorded four errors, which led to five Baylor unearned runs.
Parker French pitched 5.0 innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on nine hits and three walks and struck out three. Baylor’s Lawton Langford led the Bears offense, going 3 for 5 and registered three RBI.
On Saturday Texas (22-20, 5-13 Big 12) lost a tough game, 1-0, after Lawton Langford drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning that provided the Bears with the only run of the game. Baylor pitcher Austin Stone was credited with the win after pitching 6.0 innings and a career-high 10 strikeouts. Texas catcher Jacob Felts went 3 for 3 from the plate and drew a walk for the Longhorns.
Baylor defeated the Longhorns, 5-2, on Sunday in the final game of the series. Baylor’s Ryan Smith was credited with the win after giving up two runs on six hits and a walk and striking out three. Baylor’s Cal Towey went 2 for 4 from the plate and registered a pair of runs batted in.
Texas returns home on Tuesday to play Prairie View A&M with first pitch scheduled at 6 p.m. CT.
Softball
The Texas Softball team swept Texas Tech in a three game road series over the weekend.
In the series opener on Friday, Texas catcher Mandy Ogle led the Longhorn offense, going 3 for 4 from the plate and picked up three RBI in a 8-6 win. Texas pitcher Blaire Luna…[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] was credited with the win after she allowed two hits, three walks, no runs and struck out 10 over 6.2 innings. The Longhorns were ahead 8-0 in the in the sixth, but held off a late Red Raider rally to record the victory.
On Saturday, two home runs from Texas senior Taylor Hoagland lifted the Longhorns over Tech, 4-1. Kim Bruins (9-0) picked up the win after giving up four hits, one run and three walks and struck out five batters. Bruins also did her part at the plate, going 2 for 3.
In the final game of the series, Blaire Luna pitched 7.0 innings, allowed one run on three hits and three walks, and struck out 10 in a 4-1 victory. Texas (42-6,12-2 Big 12) picked up two runs off two Texas Tech errors, while Mandy Ogle and Torie Schmidt batted in a run each.
The Softball team returns to action May 3rd on the road against Oklahoma State in a three game series.
Men’s Golf
After winning the Big 12 Championship, the Texas Men’s Golf team will play in the one of six NCAA Regional Championship events starting May 16th.
Women’s Golf
The Texas Women’s Golf team has earned an at-large berth in the NCAA East Regional Championship in Auburn, Ala. on May 9 -11.
Men’s Tennis
The Texas Men’s Tennis team defeated Oklahoma State, 4-0, in the quarterfinals on Friday, but lost in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship to Oklahoma, 4-1, on Saturday. The Longhorns earned double points, but were swept by the Sooners in singles matches.
The Longhorns are waiting to see where they are seeded in the NCAA Championships on May 10-11.
Women’s Tennis
The Texas Women’s Tennis team won the Big 12 Tournament Championship for the second consecutive year—and their ninth Big 12 tournament title overall. The Longhorns defeated Oklahoma in the quarterfinals 4-1. They went on to defeat Texas Tech 4-3 to earn a spot in the finals. In the finals match, Texas defeated Oklahoma State 4-0.
Texas freshman Breaunna Addison was selected as the Big 12 Tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer.
The Longhorns received an automatic-bid in the NCAA Tournament and will compete in the 64-team tournament starting May 10th.
Track and Field
The Texas Men and Women’s Track and Field teams will compete in the Big 12 Outdoor Championships on May 3-5 in Waco.
Longhorn MVP
This week’s MVP goes to the—Texas Women’s Tennis team and Breaunna Addison—for winning the 2013 Big 12 Tournament Title—the ninth tournament title overall. Breaunna Addison won the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer.
Honorable Mention
This week’s Honorable Mention goes to—the Texas Softball team—for sweeping Texas Tech in a three game road series over the weekend. They pushed their record to 42-6 overall and 12-2 in Big 12 play.
