STANFORD, Calif. — Sophomore Meghan Lloyd ran the fastest time this season by any runner in the Big 12 and set a new Texas record in the steeplechase in 10:20.37 Saturday at the Cardinal Classic.

Lloyd’s time broke the previous UT standard of [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]10:26.90, which was set in 2014 by Brittany Marches.

On the men’s side, sophomore Alex Rogers finished third in the 1,500 meters behind a pair of All-America runners, Colorado’s Ben Saarel and Big 12 champion Craig Nowak of Oklahoma State. Rogers crossed the finish line in 3:40.85, 0.61 behind Saarel’s winning time. Rogers’ time was the fourth-fastest in the nation this season and the third-fastest in UT history.

“Watching Meghan and Alex grow from high school seniors into sophomores and maturing as people is the biggest thing,” assistant coach Brad Herbster said. “This whole group has put in lots of hard work and shown dedication to doing the little things. That has been fun to watch, and you see how it paid off.”

The Longhorns return home next week for the Longhorn Invitational Friday and Saturday, and then have a week off before heading to Lawrence, Kan., for the Big 12 Conference Outdoor Championships.
