In the biggest game of the season, Texas did not play to the level of efficiency they have played in the first six games of this season. For Georgia’s head coach Kirby Smart, it was his 100th win.
The 30-15 loss was especially brutal considering Texas had 29 yards of rushing offense and Quinn Ewers accounted for -34 yards and Arch Manning contributed minus one yard. Georgia shut Texas’ offense down.
The first half Texas had a total of 38 yards, two of those were rushing. Sarkisian switched out Ewers for Manning with 4:31 minutes left in the 2nd quarter to give Ewers a break.
Many thought that was a bad call by Sarkisian, however Sarkisian said in post game, “I did what I thought was best for the team.”
Ewers did return to start the second half, however that was a surprise to Ewers. Sarkisian reiterated in the post game that Quinn Ewers is QB1.
There were 26 NFL scouts at the game to watch and discover what players would rise up when the battle was fierce.
I spoke to several of the scouts and asked them if any Texas players stood out? Jahdae Barron and Gunner Helm were a couple, and a few from Georgia.
In the 14 drives for Texas, they punted five times, four times turned over on downs, two fumbles, one interception, and two touchdowns.
Matthew Golden had 161 all-purpose yards. Quintrevion Wisner rushed the ball 15 times for 52 yards.
Isaiah Bond scored the first Texas touchdown on a two-yard pass from Ewers. Jaydon Blue scored on a 17 yard reception from Ewers again in the third quarter.
The Texas defense held Georgia to 108 yards rushing and allowed 175 yards of passing.
Texas intercepted the ball three times. The most notable was a Jahdae Barron interception that was called back for pass interference, but overturned to an interception when Texas fans went absolutely mad and started throwing bottles on the field.
The referees then overturned their call. Everyone is still scratching their heads and we will have to wait for official word on Monday.
This is one game that proved Georgia remains the standard in college football. Texas has the opportunity to analyze the film and come out stronger against Vanderbilt next week.
