Everyone suspected it would be coming, it had to, but everybody wished it did not. Maalik Murphy told ESPN Pete Thamel that he would not be at the College Football Playoffs and would be transfering out of Texas.

Murphy pens note to Texas Longhorns fans on ‘X’.

The two scenerios where we had Murphy transferring was for Quinn Ewers to be staying next season, or Ewers declaring for the NFL and Murphy having to compete against Arch Manning for QB1 spot.

Ewers has not said if he is returning. Frankly, if Ewers has a game like he did in the Big 12 Championship game, Texas wins, and Ewers has another stellar game in the National Championship game, how could he resist not going to the NFL. Ewers would have shown the entire NFL that he was capable of playing at an extremely high level.

If his game was average, it may be prudent for Ewers to stay one more season.

So why is Murphy leaving? Quinns staying or not having the security of a starting spot next season? Based on Thamel’s article and quotes from Murphy, it sounds like Ewers has not made any decision.

You be the judge. How do you read it. Comment below:

Big unanswered question. Will Arch Manning be QB1 next season or will Quin Ewers?
