Men’s golf finishes third at Big 12 Championship
HUTCHINSON, Kansas — Texas junior Cole Hammer won the Big 12 men's golf individual title Wednesday, leading the Longhorns to a third-place finish at the 2021 Big 12 Championship Wednesday at the Prairie Dunes Country Club.
Hammer won the individual championship with a 4-under 276. He registered three birdies on the front nine to finish Wednesday's final round at 67 after shooting 65 Tuesday. Those two performances put together were three strokes better than any other player in the 50-player field. After going winless during a 586-day period, Hammer has now won two of the last eight amateur tournaments in which he has competed.
As a team, the Longhorns, with a score of 1,131, finished third behind Oklahoma State (1,129) and Oklahoma (1,130). It was a close race throughout Wednesday's round, considering the Cowboys, Sooners and Longhorns concluded the tournament separated by just one stroke each. Texas climbed back into the conference title discussion on the 17th hole, as all five Longhorns recorded birdies.
Pierceson Coody, who finished tied for sixth at 286, struggled on the final hole of the tournament, posting a triple bogey, while UT's other four players tallied a par on the hole.
Texas had entered the final day of play in a three-way tie for the top spot on the team leaderboard at 16-over.
Coody said last week that one of the keys to a win at the conference tournament was all five Longhorns finishing in the top 20. Texas accomplished that, as his twin brother Parker and fellow Longhorn Mason Nome tied for 10th at 9-over. Travis Vick was just one stroke behind, but finished tied for 16th.
The Longhorns will now until May 5 to learn if they will be included in the NCAA Championship field; if they secure a berth, they will begin tournament play at the NCAA Regionals.
Women's Golf selected Louisville Regional
The No. 15 Texas women's golf team punched its ticket to the NCAA Regionals Wednesday, learning they will be one of 18 teams playing in the Louisville Regional May 10-12. South Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the nation by Golfweek, headlines the field, which also includes No. 9 Florida State and No. 11 Auburn. Six teams will advance from the regional and into the national championships May 21-26 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Longhorns will attempt to reach the national championships for the fifth straight year. The Horns finished fifth at the Big 12 Championship April 20.
