The Cyclones are coming off a 38-21 road win over Tulsa last Thursday. The win was their first of the season, after suffering losses to in-state teams Northern Iowa and Iowa.
Head coach Paul Rhoads is in his fifth season as head coach, with a career record of 25-29. Texas coach Mack Brown was an assistant coach at ISU from 1979-81. Brown was an assistant when the two programs met for the first time in 1979, resulting in a 17-9 win in Austin.
Texas owns the all-time series against the Cyclones 9-1 and in Ames the Longhorns are 4-0. The last Iowa State win came in 2010, with the Cyclones edging out No. 22 Texas in Austin, 28-21.
On the field, Iowa State relies on running backs Aaron Wimberly and Jeff Woody. In last Thursday’s win against Tulsa, Wimberly amassed a career high 137 rush yards and three touchdowns from Jeff Woody.
Wimberly’s 137-yard performance was the first 100-yard game by an ISU running back since the season-opener vs. Tulsa last season. Quarterback Sam Richardson completed a career-high 26 passes on 41 attempts for 255 yds. Richardson is averaging just over 252 yards per game with 7 TDs and 3 interceptions so far.
Receivers Tad Ecby and Quenton Bundrage shoulder the load for the Cyclones. Ecby has 152 total yards and Bundrage totals 186 yards with three TDs.
On defense, ISU accumulated four sacks over three games, credit two of those to LB Jared Brackens. DB Charlie Rogers has the only interception on the team. Iowa State has recovered 6 fumbles this season and has yet to lose a fumble.
Iowa State is young team, in its season-opener vs UNI, 11 players made their first career starts, seven of which are defense. Throughout the first three games this season, 18 Cyclones have recorded their first career start.
Although lacking in experience, Iowa State always seems to have an upset in them. ISU is one of two teams (Ohio State) in the nation to beat a ranked team on the road in each of the last three seasons.
