Nine Former Longhorns on NBA Summer League Rosters
AUSTIN, Texas - Nine former Texas Basketball players are on NBA Summer League rosters and have taken part in the Orlando or Las Vegas-based action. Cory Joseph currently leads the NBA Finalist San Antonio Spurs in scoring at 17.5 points per game in Las Vegas.
Myck Kabongo (Miami Heat), Damion James (Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat), Joseph (Spurs), Dexter Pittman (San Antonio Spurs), Alexis Wangmene (San Antonio Spurs), Jordan Hamilton (Denver Nuggets), J'Covan Brown (New York Knicks), P.J. Tucker (Phoenix Suns) and Clint Chapman (Milwaukee Bucks) are all playing in the NBA's summer circuit.
Kabongo and James are the only players participating in both the Orlando and Las Vegas leagues. Kabongo is with the Heat in both leagues. He experienced action in three Orlando contests, averaging 16.3 minutes, 1.7 points and 1.3 assists per game. In one matchup in Las Vegas, he started and helped the Heat to an 81-74 victory over Toronto with 17 minutes, two rebounds and two assists.
James was a member of the Brooklyn Nets' squad in Orlando, playing in all four games and starting one. He averaged 25.0 minutes, 4.5 rebounds and shot 46.2 percent from the field. James was one of four Nets to average more than 10 points a game (10.3 ppg). In the Las Vegas session, he is teaming up with Kabongo on the Heat. James has earned time in both contests, averaging just over 17 minutes a game with 7.5 points and 5.0 rebounds.
UT's largest collection of former players is with the Spurs. Joseph, who has started both contests, is averaging 35.0 minutes and leading the squad in scoring at 17.5 points per game. He has shot 46.4 percent from the floor and is pulling down 5.5 rebounds per contest. Pittman and Wangmene have each played in one game, with Pittman recording 14 minutes, seven rebounds and four points while Wangmene entered for two minutes against the Charlotte Bobcats.
Hamilton started the Denver Nuggets' opener in Las Vegas, posting four points and nine rebounds. Brown has played in both of the New York Knicks' Las Vegas tilts, averaging 9.0 minutes and 3.0 points per game as the team has gone 1-1.
Tucker earned the start for the Phoenix Suns in an 82-69 victory in the Las Vegas opener against the Portland Trail Blazers. He contributed six points, a team second-best five rebounds and two assists while shooting 40.0 percent from the floor.
Chapman has played in both of Milwaukee's games in Las Vegas, averaging 15.5 minutes, 4.09 rebounds and 1.0 point per contest.
The Orlando league ran from July 7-12 while the Las Vegas session is July 12-22.
