No. 1 Texas subdued by Texas State, 6-4

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas suffered their second loss of the season at home in UFCU Disch-Falk Field to Texas State, 6-4 before 7,468 Texas and Texas State fans.

The game started quickly in the first inning when Eric Kennedy hit a home run over the fence in right field that scored Douglas Hodo III who walked before him. The second inning Hodo III and Eric Kennedy both walk and Melendez singled sending Hodo II home and Kennedy to third and when he tried for home, was thrown out. Texas up 3-0.

Texas State answered in the third inning with five runs and again in the fourth with a solo homer from Ortega-Jones to left field that give them 6 runs. Texas scored once more in the fifth from a sacrifice fly to left field from #14 Murphy Stehly to put the score at 6-4 Texas State.

Both teams drained their bullpens and used eight pitchers each. Daniel Blair for Texas replaced starting pitcher Eckhardt at the top of third. His first pitch resulted in a home run. He faced six batters total before Zane Morehouse replaced him. Blair got the loss.

Coach Pierce and home plate umpire chirped at each other throughout the game until Pierce was ejected late in the game. When Pierce walked out to talk with the home place umpire, the second base umpire got between them and the home plate umpire walked away.

Something seemed off the entire night with Texas. Maybe the schedule is catching up with them and they need a few days to regroup.

For Texas State, this win is only the third time in history they have beat a No. 1 team.

Texas travels to South Caroline for a three-game series this weekend.

I like exploring the why's and have three objectives. First is to give value to those who would spend time with our content. Second is to be respectful of others and for the opportunity to tell a positive story about all of the Texas Longhorns teams, players, and coaches regardless of their record. Lastly, to put wind in the sails of others using the Horns Illustrated platform. Life is GOOD!
