
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 2 Texas scored 11 runs on 14 hits, giving starter Tristan Stevens the win over Southern in the first game of the NCAA Austin Regional, 11-0, before a crowd of 5,447, or 83 percent of capacity.
Texas plays Arizona State at 6 p.m. Saturday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Stevens threw for seven innings shutting out Southern, allowing only four hits and striking out six to improve his season record to 10-3.
The Longhorns came out swinging with two runs in the first. Ivan Melendez blasted the first home run to left field. Texas scored four more runs in the second inning giving Texas a 6-0 lead, added another run in the third and then had a two-run seventh inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
In the eighth, third baseman Cam Williams blasted a two-run home run, scoring Melendez, over the Southern bullpen in left field for his 10th home run of the season giving Texas a 11-0 lead.
