In the 116 year history of Texas Men's Basketball coach Terry is the first to receive this award.
The Sporting News National Coach of the Year award is given to the best men's college basketball head coach in the NCAA Division 1.
Since taking over as interim head coach for The University of Texas Men's Basketball team, Terry has lead Texas to a 16-7 record and has 5 wins against AP Top 25 teams.
In the regular season Texas overall record is 23-8 and came in 2nd in Big 12.
When it comes to the last seconds of play and the scores are razor thin (like the difference is 5 pts or less), Texas is 7-1 with Terry as coach.
Terry is leading the team into the Big 12 Conference play and then on to the NCAA Tournament in coming weeks.
- Texas earned No. 2 seed in Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship
- Texas is currently ranked No. 7 in AP
- Texas has ranked in Top 10 for the past 16 consecutive weeks - the longest stretch since 2002-2003 when Texas was ranked in the Top 10 in all 19 polls
Note: Terry was a Texas assistant coach during the 2002-2003 period.
Rodney Terry joins the ranks of other coaching greats who have been awarded this prestigious award such as:
- John Wooden (4x) - UCLA
- Bob Knight - Indiana
- John Thompson Jr - Georgetown
- Rick Pitino (2x) - Kentucky
- Mike Krzyzewski - Duke
- Al Skinner - Boston College
- Bill Self (3x) - Kansas
- Tubby Smith (2x) - Texas Tech
- Mark Few - Gonzaga
- Juwan Howard - Michigan
- Ed Cooley - Providence
Rodney Terry becomes the 60th award winner.
When we have had the chance to be with coach Terry during media or news conferences, Terry is unassuming, confident, and gracious.
If there was a movie ever made about the Texas Men's Basketball program during this time, you immediately go with Denzel Washington who would play Terry in the movie.
Both are swave, confident, kind, and strong leaders, yet servant hearted to their core.
In postgame press conferences, Terry prefers shining the light on others like his players (past and present), giving high praises to opponents who have played or coached well against Texas.
So to honor Terry in that, three of his players have also received awards before the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship.
- Graduate Marcus Carr honored All-Big 12 First Team
- Graduate Sir-Jabari Rice named National Sixth Man of the Year
- Super senior Timmy Allen was select All-Big 12 Honorable Mention
