WHEN FERA transferred from Penn State to Texas, the Longhorns hoped he’d fill the team’s hole at placekicker. But Fera didn’t arrive until just before the season started and came in with a groin injury that reduced his effectiveness — he made just two of four field goal attempts and missed two extra points. [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]

This spring, Fera worked exclusively at punter, but the Longhorns haven’t completely given up on him as a placekicker.

Fera was named to the 2012 Lou Groza Award (for the nation’s best kicker) watch list before transferring from Penn State. He has connected on 16 of 21 field goals (76 percent) and is 43-for-45 on extra-point attempts during his career. He also has punted 110 times for 4,590 yards for an average of 41.7 yards, earning him a candidacy for the 2011 Ray Guy Award.

He was named first-team All-Big Ten at punter by ESPN.com and second-team all-conference in 2011 after he connected on 14 of 17 field goals (82.4 percent), was 20 of 20 on extra points and scored a team-high 62 points.

Fera gets the preseason nod as the player likely to improve the most in 2013. His impact for Texas will be determined by how much he will get on the field.
