THE STORY is well known.
Whaley came to Texas to become the next great running back but grew out of the position (he’s 6’3” and 292 pounds). He’s now a key contributor in the interior of the Texas defensive line. [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] He has appeared in 38 career games (26 on defense, 12 at running back) and has 10 career starts, all along the defensive line. Whaley tied for the team lead in blocked kicks (two) in 2012.
He struggled to meet expectations at running back because he wasn’t quick enough or light enough to compete with the 200-pound runners. But put Whaley in the trenches and he’s ranked high on the charts and among the most athletic in that group.
“Now that I have a year under my belt, playing defensive tackle is fun,” Whaley said. “I’m working hard to become a great player and steadily working to get better.”
Fully immersed in the rotation up front, Whaley will have every opportunity to make his biggest splash among a horde of other talented tackles. Expect him to be a fixture in the middle and unstoppable if he can find a way to pick up a fumble or nab an interception.
