Steve Patterson: “There’s been a lot of malarkey in the press over the last couple of weeks.”

With the Texas Longhorns looking for a new head coach after Mack Brown officially announced he’d be stepping down after the Alamo Bowl, the rumor mills are buzzing. Every “reporter” is out there taking[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] grains of salt and making them mountains. Can you blame them? Reporters that break stories can also break the bank. This is part of the job.

A lot of NFL head coaches names got into the mix thanks to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. He reported that new Texas athletic director Steve Patterson had targeted four NFL coaches: Seattle’s Pete Carroll, Green Bay’s Mike McCarthy, San Francisco’s Jim Harbaugh and Philadelphia’s Chip Kelly.

All but McCarthy have college head coaching experience. Patterson believes in a more stealth like approached and cautioned anyone listening to the rumors in the press.

“I think that’s the only successful way to have a search process,” Patterson said. “I’m not going to be sitting in front of you [media] guys every day talking about who I had a phone call with. At the end of the day, there’s been a lot of malarkey in the press over the last couple of weeks.”

“I think the key is setting the criteria, getting some clarity around that, then moving as expeditiously as we can to hire the best football coach we can as quickly as we can,” Patterson said.
