record holder also won the 500-yard freestyle on the first day of competition. “Michael is getting ready for the FINA Short Course World Championships in Turkey, and needs to be pretty good. He was tonight,” head coach Eddie Reese said. “He’s tough, mentally. He’s one of the best fighters out there. He’s going to swim well this year.” Austin Surhoff paced the Longhorns by taking sixth in the 200-meter backstroke, and Dax Hill placed second in the 100-meter freestyle consolation final in 43.27.
Texas capped the competition by taking second in the 400 freestyle relay, as Surhoff, Youngquist, Moore and Hill finished in 2:54.06. The Longhorns went on to claim the meet’s team title with 428 points.
