AUSTIN, Texas — When the Maryland Terrapins come to Austin to kick off the 2017 season, they will do so against one of the nation’s top 25 teams, according to the preseason USA Today Coaches’ Poll. A year removed from finishing sixth in the Big 12 with a 5-7 record, the Longhorns have been voted into the No. 23 spot.

The Longhorns are the only team in the preseason poll that posted a sub-.500 record in 2016.

The Southeastern Conference has six teams in the poll, headlined by preseason No. 1 Alabama. The Atlantic Coast Conference has five teams in the poll, as does the Big 12.

In addition to the Longhorns at No. 23, the Oklahoma Sooners, with new head coach Lincoln Riley, are No. 8; Oklahoma State is No. 11, Kansas State is No. 19, just one spot ahead of No. 20 West Virginia.
