Texas Football: Sarkisian on why Devon J Campbell picked Texas
AUSTIN, Texas — Minutes before head coach Steve Sarkisian walked up to the podium to discuss National Signing Day for Texas football, Devon J Campbell announced that he was coming to the University of Texas to play football. It is a good thing because Campbell was the only signee.
Coach Sarkisian said in his opening statement on Campbell.
“Clearly it's a great day for us adding DJ Campbell to the roster, heck of a player, another offensive lineman, seventh offensive lineman in the class, really physical player, talented, a guy who plays tackle, has the flexibility to potentially play guard. So, you know for us, that was, that was, a great gift for us. Another in-state offensive lineman which was a priority for us in this class to kind of bolster the offense and defensive lines and I think we did that. I think that it sets us up for a nice future of where we're headed on that front.”
Devon J Campbell is an All-America, all-state, and three-time all-district honoree. Campbell is ranked No. 9 nationally, No. 1 among offensive guards and No. 2 overall in the state of Texas by ESPN. Campbell played at Bowie HS in Arlington, Texas under coach Joseph Sam. Campbell stands 6’3” and weighs 310 lbs.
Sarkisian says of the seven lineman signees, “Ultimately for me, that was a home run. To get those seven guys, I’ve said all along ‘Big Humans’ right. We need big humans in our program. We need to get bigger up front, more physical up front.”
For Campbell it was either Oklahoma Sooners or the Texas Longhorns. We asked coach Sarkisian what were the reasons Campbell chose Texas.
