Freshman Tiarra Davis started in the circle for the Longhorns, but after surrendering five runs off of six hits, was relieved in the third inning by junior Gabby Smith. Smith improved to 10-3 with the win and finished with two runs off of four hits.
Senior shortstop Taylor Thom headlined the evening for the Longhorns, turning in a home run and a grand slam. Thom finished the evening with seven RBIs. The grand slam marks the fifth in her career, most in Texas history.
The Longhorns got on the scoreboard early with four runs in the first inning. Senior Brejae Washington and sophomore Lindsey Stephens started the hitting off with singles before Thom stepped up to the plate and belted a pitch out of left field for her first home run of the night, a 3 RBI shot. Freshman Stephanie Wong scored next off of a single by Davis.
Texas didn’t let up in the second inning, scoring six to go up 10-0 against the Bobcats. Washington, Davis, freshman Devon Tunning and sophomore Holly Kern each had hits in the second. Also contributing to the Texas lead was an interference call against the Texas State catcher and a wild pitch which plated two runs for the Longhorns.
In the third inning, the Bobcats scored five runs off of five hits to bring the score to 10-5. Courtney Harris turned up big for Texas State with a two-run shot out let field.
Two more home runs in the third, one each from Tunning and Stephens, extended the Longhorns’ lead seven. Stevens is currently leading the Big 12 with 11 home runs, 4 triples and 45 RBIs on the season.
In the fourth, Texas State scored two more times. In the bottom of the fourth, Texas added seven runs to put the game out of range at 19-7 and end the game after five innings. Tunning turned in a third hit on the night, a three RBI double. Thom plated Stephens, Washington and Tunning to get the grand slam and Smith tripled to score Wong, ending the game.
Texas will play host to Texas Tech this weekend in a three-game series. The first game of the Big 12 series is scheduled for 4:30 pm on Friday.
