Texas Soccer Pulls a 2-0 Win Over Arkansas Little Rock
Goals by seniors Sharis Lachappelle and and Julie Arnold propelled Texas Women’s Soccer to 2-0 win against the University of Arkansas Little Rock on Mon. Oct. 20 at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Longhorns came into the match after a tough loss to TCU last week.
Junior goalkeeper, Abby Smith sat out the game to rest for the matches ahead. Senior goalkeeper, Ava Vogel had her first start of her college career. She played well against the Trojans who had three shots the entire match.
In the 4th minute midfielder Lachappelle scored a goal by a penalty kick, making it her second goal of the 2014 season.
The Trojans were unable to answer with a goal during the first half of the match, with only two shots made compared to Texas' 14 shots. Lachappelle tied her record of shots for goal with six shots for a career high and three shots for the season high in the second half of the match.
In the second half defender Arnold scored her first career goal in the 70th minute. Arnold said she felt proud and pleased to walk away with her first goal during his last season at Texas.
“All my teammates were great and really celebrated with me, said Arnold. “It’s good to win again. We moved the ball well. That’s huge momentum moving forward.”
Texas' 29 shots in the match represent a new high for the season, two more than the previous seasonal mark of 27.
The record impressed head coach Angela Kelly and she said she's excited to move into the final portion of the regular season with her team.
“It’s always important to get back on the field and move forward, said Kelly. “I enjoyed watching the soccer we were playing. Our playmakers took care of the ball for us. “
More than any other year Kelly has noticed a team that scores first during a match, usually wins the match.
“The momentum is really important,” commented Kelly. “Teams are well organized defensively and our game is continuing to get to a higher level.”
The Texas longhorns will travel to Norman, Oklahoma to play Oklahoma University on Fri. Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. The last home game will be against Oklahoma State University on Halloween, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. at the Mike A. Myers Stadium.
