AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 17 Texas soccer team picked up a first-place vote and a total of 59 points, tying Baylor for third in the Big 12 preseason poll.

West Virginia was picked to win the league crown, collecting 79 points and eight of 10 first-place votes, while Oklahoma State was picked to finish second, earning 69 points. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.

The Longhorns welcome back 23 letter winners from last season, a group that accounted for 97 percent (28 of 29) of the team’s goals, 90 percent (27 of 30) of the team’s assists and 11 shutouts in goal.

Among the key players back in 2018 are second-team United Soccer Coaches (USC) All-America forward Cyera Hintzen, midfielders Katie Glenn and Haley Berg, defender Atu Mshana and goalkeeper Nicole Curry.

Hintzen named to MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List

Hintzen, the Longhorns’ leading scorer in 2017, is one of 44 players named to the preseason watch list for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is given annually to the nation’s premier male and female players. The winners will be announced Jan. 4, 2019, at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.

A unanimous selection to the 2018 preseason All-Big 12 team, Hintzen will try to build on a 2017 campaign in which she scored 10 goals and added five assists to lead the Big 12 in scoring with 25 points. She led the Big 12 with six game-winning goals, including “golden goal” (overtime) tallies in UT wins over Texas-Rio Grande Valley and Texas Tech.
