
The Texas Softball team defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi 8-0 in five innings on Wednesday night. Freshman left-hander Tiarra Davis started the game for the Longhorns (20-15) and was credited the win after pitching three innings. With the win, Davis improved to 9-7 on the season.
Davis surrendered one hit while striking out[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] four and allowing only one walk. Junior Gabby Smith and freshman Lauren Slatten each pitched one inning of relief. Smith allowed only one hit and struck out one batter.
Both Davis and senior Brejae Washington led the Longhorns with two hits apiece while Davis and senior catch Mandy Ogle had two RBIs apiece. The Baylor starting pitcher, Liz Carter, surrendered 11 runs through four innings while striking out only two and allowing two walks.
In the bottom of the first, the Longhorns went up by three thanks to a double by Lindsey Stephens and two singles by Davis and sophomore Holly Kern. The Longhorns’ five other scores came in the third off two doubles, one each by Davis and Stephanie Ceo, a home run from Ogle and a single by Washington.
This past weekend, the Longhorns defeated No. 12/12 Baylor 4-1 on Saturday afternoon in their Big 12 season opener. The teams were scheduled to meet again on Sunday, however, was postponed till May 6 due to rain in the Waco area.
Ogle had one home run against the Bears, her fourth of the season, and knocked in two runners with the shot. Ogle finished the afternoon by going 2-for-4 also contributing with a stand-up double and three RBIs.
The home run by Ogle put the Longhorns up 3-0 in the top of the fourth. Baylor responded in the bottom of the frame with their lone score of the afternoon, a home run shot by Baylor’s Ari Hawkins.
Freshman Stephanie Wong scored the Longhorn’s other run in the seventh off an RBI single from Davis. Davis started a third straight game for the Longhorns in the circle, pitching her 11th complete game of the season. Against the Bears on Saturday, Davis tossed 7.0 innings while giving up only two hits and one run.
The Longhorns are off this weekend and will be back in action next Wednesday, April 2 when they host Texas State in Austin at 7 pm.
