A glance at the results of the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships reveals what already is known: that the University of Texas is among the elite programs in the nation after the UT men finished seventh at this season’s meet, while the Texas women’s team finished tied for ninth. [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]

But the program also continues to shine in the classroom, as 13 Longhorns were named Friday to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic and scholar Teams. Seven members of the men’s team and six members of the women’s team were selected, while the women’s team earned team recognition, getting tabbed as an All-Academic Team.

Those honored included (from the men’s team): sprinter Carlton Anumnu (3.40 GPA in electrical engineering), sprinter Charles Anumnu (3.31, electrical engineering), thrower Ryan Crouser (3.39, economics), distance specialist Zach Hamstra (3.71, accounting), combined events specialist Johannes Hock (3.70, exercise science), pole vaulter Parks McNeil (3.44, corporate communications) and distance specialist (and cross country runner) Brady Turnbull (3.74, supply chain management; (from the women’s team) sprinter Kendall Baisden (3.75, supply chain management/business honors), distance specialist (and cross country runner) Katie Burford (3.69, public health), hurdler/sprinter Melissa Gonzalez (3.33/sport management), sprinter/hurdler Ariel Jones (3.41 rhetoric and writing), distance specialist Sandy Raines (3.59, psychology) and distance specialist (and cross country runner) Megan Siebert (3.85, exercise science/health promotion).

The women’s team earned its team honor by posting a team GPA of 3.32, easily exceeding the standard of a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. The men’s team just missed joining the UT women with a full-team honor, compiling a team GPA of 2.935.

Athletes are eligible for individual honors only if they can claim a 3.25 GPA and are among the top athletes in the nation in their respective events, either by competing in any round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, by ranking among the top 96 in the nation in an individual event or among the top 48 relay teams during the indoor season.
