Texas Women’s Basketball gets late win over Iowa State

The Texas Women’s Basketball team put together a late comeback to defeat No. rv/23 Iowa State at home 71-64 on Sunday afternoon. With seven minutes left in the game, the Longhorns trailed by eight before putting together a 14-3 run to put the game away.

“That was huge for us to be able to really get over the hump,” said head coach Karen Aston after the game. “I thought they really stayed focused down the stretch.”

Junior Nneka Enemkpali led Texas with 12 points while [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] sophomores Brady Sanders and Empress Davenport both finished in the double digits with 10 points apiece. The win pushed the Longhorns to 16-7 on the season and 7-4 in the Big 12 which includes a 12-1 home record and a 5-0 home Big 12 record.

Iowa State jumped ahead early with a 19-10 lead in the first half. Halfway through the first half, Texas surged to tie the game at 22-22 with a 12-3 run. The Longhorns trailed the Cyclones by three going into the locker room, Iowa State leading 36-33 at the half.

After the break, senior GiGi Mazionyte put up seven to start the second half to lead the Longhorns on a 9-2 run to bring the game to within one. Iowa State came back, bringing their lead to eight with seven minutes remaining.

A three-pointer by Sanders gave the Longhorns their first lead of the afternoon with a little less than three minutes remaining in the game. Texas never trailed after that, defeating the Cyclones for the Longhorns 10th consecutive win in the Erwin Center.

With the wins the Longhorns moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Big 12 conference standings.

The Longhorns will travel to Manhattan, Kansas to face Kansas State this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
