The Texas Women’s soccer team has taken a running start at the beginning of the season. The Longhorns beat the University of Nevada 5-1 on Aug. 31 at Mike A. Myers Stadium

Early in the first half of the match, Texas picked up the tempo quickly. Sophomore and junior midfielders, Julia Dyche and Lindsey Meyer assisted senior defender Brooke Gilbert to score the first goal at the 16th minute.

“We take it one game at a time. It starts with one goal, and then the floodgates open.” Gilbert said.

The “floodgates” did open for Texas less than one [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] minute after Gilbert’s goal. Sophomore forward, Jasmine Hart assisted junior forward Chantale Campbell to keep the lead.

Nevada answered 13 seconds later when forward Daisha Jones-Oglesby assisted midfielder Chrisalyn Fonte with a goal.

In the 37th minute Hart made her second assist to freshman forward Olivia Brook to score the third goal at the end of the first half.

Texas kept the pressure at the beginning of the second half. Gilbert made her second goal of the match at the 51st minute with assist from senior midfielder, Sharis Lachappelle.

Hart made her third assist of the match to freshman forward, Olivia Brook.

“Having [Assistant Coach] Kristine Lilly helps a lot. She helps a lot with the forwards to angle our runs better. It’s been great having her,” Hart said.

The last time Texas scored five goals was on Aug. 28 2011 against California State University Northridge. Sweeping Nevada, Texas maintains their twelve home game winning streak.

“We did a better job of controlling our space and organizing our passing patterns,” Head coach Angela Kelly said of the win.  “It’s important we control the rhythm of the game.”

According to Kelly fan attendance plays a critical in the team’s success. Kelly credits the fans as, “our twelfth man.”

“Were so grateful,” Kelly said. “[The fans] give our girls energy. I can’t thank them enough.”

The Texas longhorns will travel to face Texas A&M University Corpus Christi on Fri. Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.

On Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. the longhorns will return home to play Montana at the Mike A. Myers Stadium. The game will be televised on The Longhorn Network.
