AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas softball team led off the 2015 season in the best possible way, sweeping a doubleheader from Howard College at Red & Charline McCombs Field, winning the opener, 9-0, and then coming back for a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.

Three Texas pitchers — Tiarra Davis, Paige von Sprecken and Kristen Clark — combined to allow just three hits and strike out five in the season-opening shutout. Junior outfielder Stephany Wong went 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI, while junior infielder Kelli Hanzel drove in a pair of runs, and second baseman Stephanie Ceo, freshman outfielder Reagan Hathaway, junior infielder Celina Felix and freshman outfielder Bekah Alcozer each drove home a single run.

The UT offense pounded out 12 hits in the nightcap, including two each from infielder Devon Tunning (who also had a double and a stolen base and scored twice) and catcher Erin Shireman, who added a double and an RBI. Center fielder Lindsey Stephens also added a pair of RBI.

The Longhorns will return to McCombs Field at 6:30 p.m., Thursday against Temple College.
