Volleyball rallies past Penn State, 3-1; faces Nebraska Monday

OMAHA, Neb. — After dropping the first set, the No. 4 Texas volleyball team rallied to take the next three to knock off No. 13 Penn State, 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 30-28, 25-17).

.The victory allowed the Longhorns to reach the NCAA Regional Final for the 15th time in the last 17 years, and improved their record this season to 25-1.

The Horns now will take on Nebraska for a spot in the national semifinals; UT has reached the tournament’s final four 12 previous times.

Outside hitter Logan Eggleston led the Longhorns with 22 kills, while Skylar Fields added a career-high 21. Eggleston also had eight digs, two blocks and an ace; Fields and middle blocker Asjia O’Neal each hit .500 to pace the UT offensive attack.

Setter Jhenna Gabriel quarterbacked the Longhorn offense, handing out 55 assists to go along with 18 digs, for her sixth double-double of the season.

The Longhorns led, 22-19, before wilting at the end of the first set. After winning the second set to tie the match, the turning point game in the third set, which stretched out until the Longhorns edged the Nittany Lions, 30-28.

Monday’s matchup with Nebraska, which will start 45 minutes after the conclusion of the 11 a.m match, will be carried on ESPN2.
