AUSTIN, Texas — Texas announced that 6’6” guard/forward Jaylon Tyson from Plano, Texas, ranked No 42 by ESPN out of high school, has entered the transfer portal after 12 games in which he played for a total of 72 minutes and scored 27 points of which 24 were scored in the first two games of the season.

Tyson started strong for Texas against Texas Lutheran playing 17 minutes and was a leading scorer with 13 points. The second game against Houston Baptist, Tyson played 14 minutes and tied for the second highest leading scorer with 11 points, then something happened.

Tyson only played one minutes against Gonzaga and did not score, played for 11 minutes against Northern Colorado and did not score while only taking four shots. Coach Beard did not play Tyson against San Jose State, gave him four minutes against California Baptist, one minute against Sam Houston, and 12 minutes against UTRGV.

Tyson did not see any playing time against Seton Hall or Stanford and his last time in a Texas jersey was against Alabama State where he played for one minute.

When Tyson committed to Texas he pinned on his social media, “It has always been my dream to play for Coach Beard. When I started getting recruited by high major schools, Coach saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. With that being said … Hook’Em 🏀🤘”

What changed and what happened between the Houston Baptist game and Gonzaga game? Coach Beard did give Tyson substantial playing time in five of the 12 games, but scored 24 of his 27 points in the first two games.

Coach Beard said of Tyson’s transfer, “We want to thank Jaylon and his family and offer our support for his decision. We will miss him and we all wish him the best.”

We discovered the reason why Jaylon Tyson transferred. It was about playing time. After the game with Incarnate Word, Brian Davis of the Statesman asked coach to elaborate on Tyson's transfer. Beard has deep regrets that Tyson went into the transfer portal, has complete respect for his and his family’s decision. It was all about playing time.

Here are Coach Beard's remarks. Listen in.
