DAVID ASH and the Longhorns found their groove in Shady Grove last year, and they hope to make the Rebels yell again when Ole Miss comes to Austin. Plenty of familiar faces return from last year’s battle, where a near-perfect Ash threw for 326 yards and four touchdowns in the 66-31 win.

Expectations continue to rise for Ole Miss  [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)] after last season’s seven wins, including close losses against Texas A&M and LSU.  And the Rebels have several reasons to be optimistic — their top-five recruiting class includes defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil and wideout Laquon Treadwell, all the top prospects at their respective positions. That said, gold stars in recruiting don’t always translate to wins. Texas deals with high expectations every season. Can the Rebels do the same when the lights shine the brightest?

The Rebels’ greatest strength lies in their skill position players. Last season, receiver Donte Moncrief lit up the Texas secondary for seven catches, 144 yards and a touchdown. Moncrief could play at the professional level as soon as next season. For now, he’s public enemy No. 1 for “DBU.”

With Vince Sanders on the other side of the field, along with fellow freshman receiver Quincy Adeboyejo (good luck pronouncing that, Craig Way), the Texas corners will need to put in some work. Significant concerns surround quarterback Bo Wallace, who underwent offseason shoulder surgery and missed a chance to participate in spring practice. If Wallace can’t make the trip, the pressure falls on the shoulders of Barry Brunetti to pull off the upset on the 40 Acres.

The Rebels will be a potential force in the SEC two years down the road, but it’s unrealistic to think they can hang with the more mature and versatile Longhorns this season.
