TCU RECEIVED a rude awakening during its first season of Big 12 play, losing five conference games in 2012. Unfortunately, the Horned Frogs’ Thanksgiving Day win over the Longhorns served as the highlight of the season, leaving a worse taste in a Texas fan’s mouth than week-old turkey stuffing. This season, TCU stands in the way of Texas as a true contender for the Big 12 Championship.
The Horned Frogs fought through adversity last season while dealing with a number of player suspensions. The most significant player involved, quarterback Casey Pachall, returns this year and looks to return to form against the Longhorns. Who becomes his go-to receiver is a bigger question, since receiver Josh Boyce no longer suits up for the purple and white.
TCU’s defense returns nine starters and stands as one of the top 10 in the nation, led by AP Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Devonte Fields. The team hopes for an encore to Fields’ freshman season, which included 10 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss. The Horned Frogs also have All-American cornerback Jason Verrett in their pocket.
Outside of Oklahoma, the match-up with TCU is an early candidate for the Big 12 game of the year. With points at a premium, Texas will have its heart and talent put to the test and the battle could serve as the catalyst for the Longhorns’ return to the top tier of the conference.

DID YOU KNOW?
In 1971, head coach Jim Pittman, former assistant at Texas, chose a particular shade of lilac for the TCU uniforms. He hoped to emulate the Longhorns’ switch from orange to burnt orange but TCU’s uniforms were regarded as the worst in school history and the team returned to a royal purple color in 1974 after his tragic death on the sidelines.
