Texas Women’s Soccer Opens Season Unbeaten

The University of Texas Women's Soccer team ended the weekend with a 1-1 double overtime draw against South Florida on Sunday afternoon at Mike A. Meyers Stadium. The Longhorns shut out Georgia in their season opener on Friday night in a 2-0 victory at home.
In their first ever meeting with South Florida, Texas sophomore goalkeeper Abby Smith scored her first career goal off a free kick from just behind the half line and gave the Longhorns a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute.
South Florida's Sarah Miller equalized five minutes later after a great first touch allowed Miller to split the Longhorn defenders and dribble past Smith for an open shot on goal.
After a lackluster first half by both teams with just one shot on goal, the second half opened up and featured more attacking and physical play. The match finished with 26 total fouls.
The Longhorns (1-0-1) had plenty of opportunities to find the winning goal going forward with South Florida conceding 14 corners, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Abby Smith recorded four saves in the match. Her best save came in the 57th minute when South Florida's Sharla Passariello got behind the Texas defense from a through ball by Demi Stokes. Passariello found herself one-on-one, but the shot stopper denied USF a goal with great positioning.
In extra time, the Longhorns had a golden opportunity to convert when freshman Jasmine Hart connected with a cross into the box and forced South Florida goalkeeper Christiane Endler to make a diving stop in the 98th minute.
Both teams traded shots in the second overtime period, but neither team was able to find a winner after 110 minutes of play.
On Friday against Georgia, junior defender Brooke Gilbert scored the Longhorns' first goal of the season five minutes into the first half. The goal came off a set piece following a Georgia foul and Gilbert scored the third goal of her career.
The Longhorns extended their lead in the 64th minute off a corner kick, when sophomore Lindsey Meyer sent a rebound into the net from point blank.
The shutout was Abby Smith's eighth of her career.
Texas will travel to Oregon State on Aug. 30 to play in their first road test.
