411OnTheForty: Grosso, Echols earn national soccer honors after 7-0 Texas victory
When a team scores seven goals, the nation quickly takes notice.
Following the Texas soccer team's 7-0 rout of Kansas State Friday in Austin, junior midfielder Julia Grosso was named Tuesday to this week's 11-member Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, while freshman forward Presley Echols earned an honorable mention to the squad.
For Grosso, getting named to the prestigious team marked the second such honor in her career. Echols also was awarded with an honorable mention for the second time this fall.
Against Kansas State, Grosso found the back of the net for her second goal of the season in the 59th minute after stealing a Kansas State pass and firing a shot from about nine yards out. Just over 10 minutes later, Grosso found a wide-open Lauryn Oliver, who scored the Longhorns' fifth goal of the day, to pick up her first assist of the season.
Echols, who has wasted little time making her mark as a Longhorn, tallied her first college assist just 2:01 into the contest. Later in the second half, she scored her second goal of the season on a shot that snuck right inside the right post of the K-State goal. On Echols' first three shots of her collegiate career, she found the back of the net twice.
The Longhorns, 2-3 on the season, hit the road for a long trip to Ames, Iowa, where they will battle Iowa State at 6 p.m. (Central time) Friday. Texas is 0-2 on the road this season. The Cyclones enter the match with a 2-3 record.
