Horns Illustrated Week in Review (April 8th-15th)

Baseball

The Texas baseball team dropped two games against Kansas on the road in a three-game series over the weekend.

In the series opener on Friday, the Jayhawks rallied from a 4-0 deficit and defeated the Longhorns in the bottom of the 12th inning. The Jayhawks’ Tucker Tharp hit a walk-off single, scoring Dakota Smith from second to give the Jayhawks the 7-6 victory.

The Longhorns (19-15, 4-8 Big 12) responded on Saturday with a 2-1 victory behind the pitching of sophomore Dillon Peters (3-2). Peters pitched a complete game, allowing one run on six hits and struck out three. Despite Jacob Felts .231 batting average this season, Felts picked up an RBI and went 2 for 3 from the plate.

On Sunday in the final game of the series, the Jayhawks pulled out a 4-3 victory behind a two RBI-game from Kevin Kuntz. Kuntz hit an RBI-groundout in the sixth inning to drive in the Jayhawks’ winning run.

The baseball team…[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]will return to action Tuesday versus Texas Pan-American at 6 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns will then host a three-game home series versus West Virginia over the weekend.

 2013 Texas Invitational

The University of Texas Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams hosted the 2013 Texas Invitational on Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The one day, non-scored meet featured seven other schools competing—Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU, Houston, Cal State Northridge, UTSA and Texas State.

Kyle Thompson won first place in the 800 Meters with a time of 1:48.48.

Texas sophomore Will Spence won the Men’s Discus with a throw of 57.52 meters.

Texas freshman Courtney Okolo won the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 52.52—a personal best for her.

The Men’s team finished with four first-place finishes, five second-place finishes, and three third-place finishes.

The Women’s Track team finished with four first-place finishes, four second-place finishes, and five third place finishes at the 2013 Texas Invitational.

The teams return to action on April 18, at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California.

Texas will also host the Longhorn Invitational next Saturday, April 20, in the final regular-season home meet of the season.

Softball

The Texas Softball team pushed their win streak to fifteen games after sweeping Iowa State in a three-game series.

Blaire Luna pitched her second consecutive no-hitter in the series opener (her previous no-hitter came against Western Kentucky) in a 8-0 victory over Iowa State on Friday. Luna walked two batters and struck out 11 in her 20th win of the season.

Texas freshman Erin Shireman led the Longhorn hitters with three RBIs and went 2 for 3 at the plate.

On Saturday, a grand slam by Texas senior Taylor Hoagland gave the Longhorns the victory, 12-4, in the second game of the series. The Longhorns scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning after falling behind 2-0.

The Longhorns closed out the three-game series with a 7-2 victory on Sunday. Blaire Luna picked up her 21st win of the season. Luna pitched seven innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and struck out 11.

Kim Bruins and Taylor Thom led the Longhorn hitters with two RBIs and combined to go 4 for 6 from the plate.

Men’s Golf

The No. 3 Texas Men’s Golf team won their third consecutive Morris Williams Intercollegiate Title on Sunday at the University of Texas Golf Club.

Senior Cody Gribble finished in fifth place at 3-under for the tournament.

Freshman Brandon Stone shot even-par on Sunday afternoon recording four birdies and four bogeys. He finished the tournament at 4-over and placed tied for 19th.

The Texas team returns to action April 22 at the Big 12 Championship in Kansas.

Women’s Golf

The Longhorn’s Women’s Golf team finished seventh overall out of 17 teams in the PING/ASU Invitational.

Texas senior Desiree Dubreuil shot 5-under at the tournament and finished tied for fifth place.

The PING/ASU tournament was the Longhorn’s final event of the regular season, but they will start postseason action on Friday, April 19 at the Big 12 Championship in Iowa.

Men’s Tennis

The No. 16 Texas Men’s Tennis team defeated TCU, 4-3, on Saturday.

Texas senior Daniel Whitehead defeated Orlando Superlano in the deciding singles match.

Whitehead defeated Superlano in the third set after the going into a seven-point tiebreaker that ended 11-9 in Whitehead’s favor.

The win gave the Longhorns their second Big 12 conference win of the season and 14th overall.

Texas returns to action when they host Baylor on Wednesday, April 17 in Austin.

Women’s Tennis

The No. 29 Texas Women’s Tennis team picked up two Big 12 conference wins with victories over Kansas and Kansas State on the road.

Texas picked up the victory against Kansas on Friday, 6-1. Breaunna Addison defeated Kansas’ Maria Belen Luduena 6-4, 7-5, in the deciding singles match.

Texas recorded their second victory over the weekend when they defeated Kansas State on Saturday, 6-1.

Texas’ Breaunna Addison defeated Petra Niedermayerova in the deciding singles match—6-2, 6-2—to give the Longhorns their sixth win in the Big 12 this season.

The Longhorns will complete the regular season next week when they visit Baylor and TCU.

Longhorn MVP

This week’s MVP goes to the—Texas Men’s Golf team—for their third consecutive Robert Morris Invitational victory over the weekend. Cody Gribble finished tied fifth overall at the tournament and finished at 3-under.

Honorable Mention

This week’s Honorable Mention goes to the—Texas Men and Women’s Track and Field teams—for their eight first-place finishes. The teams also combined for 25 top-three finishes in the meet.

This week’s second Honorable Mention goes to—Blaine Luna—for her second consecutive no-hitter and 11 strikeouts in her 20th win of the season.
