AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas baseball team put up four runs in the first inning, despite consistent, heavy rain, en route to a 5-2 victory over visiting UCLA, the Longhorns’ second in as many nights at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. UT will try to complete the series sweep at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Senior infielder Kacy Clemens ripped [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]a first-inning double to right-center field, driving in Travis Jones with the game’s first run. Clemens then scored on an RBI double by freshman Austin Todd, who subsequently scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a Ryan Reynolds RBI double.

Texas starter Morgan Cooper started the game as quickly as the Texas offense, collecting five strikeouts in the first two innings. As the rain increased in the third inning, Cooper served up three walks and a wild pitch to allow the Bruins’ first run.

The Longhorns reclaimed their four-run lead in the bottom of the third when Reynolds poked the second home run of his freshman season down the left-field line.

The Bruins again pulled to within a couple of runs in the top of the fourth, but hardly threatened after that.

Cooper improved to 2-0 with the victory, during which he allowed just two hits while striking 10 and walking four. Texas improved to 11-6 on the season, whule UCLA fell to 6-7.
